Vaccines

All dogs coming from outside Sweden and Norway must have a rabies vaccine. All the dogs, regardless of which country, must be vaccinated against distemper, parvo and infectious liver disease. Vaccination against distemper (D) must be carried out after the dog is one year old (regardless of any previous vaccination). Vaccination must not be older than four years. The vaccination must be done at least 14 days before the competition day. Furthermore, it is recommended that participating dogs are also vaccinated against parainfluenza (kennel cough).
(according to revised national supplementary rules)

Deworming

As far as deworming is concerned, the requirement is gone, as the fox’s dwarf tapeworm was found in a number of premises in Sweden last year, which therefore cannot be considered free from the disease. However, it is still recommended that dogs that may have been in contact with small rodents be dewormed before entering Sweden.

From 1 May 2013, new rules apply to dogs traveling from Sweden to Norway. The dog must be dewormed against the fox’s dwarf tapeworm. Deworming must take place 1-5 days before entry to Norway, performed by a veterinarian and documented in the dog’s passport.

Requirements for deworming from Sweden also apply to the EU countries Finland, Great Britain, Ireland or Malta. Deworming must take place 24–120 hours before entry and it is thus no longer possible to deworm directly before crossing the border.

Veterinarians on the Beaver Trap Trail offer this free of charge to participants provided the driver provides deworming agents. (We recommend that the driver himself brings deworming agents as we cannot guarantee that there is enough in Apoteket’s assortment in the nearest city.)

Doping/medications

As a starting point, all medications for dogs and doping of dogs and drivers are prohibited. If a participant is caught with medication in the sled, that person risks being disqualified. Many medicines also have withdrawal rules, i.e. that they cannot be given within a certain number of days before a competition. For details on medication for dogs, more information is available at www.skk.se. In case of necessary medication that is allowed, please contact the referee and tell him before the competition so that there is no misunderstanding.

Dog passport

A dog passport for each individual dog is mandatory when entering Sweden from the EU.

As of 29 December 2014, new rules apply in the EU:

From 1 May 2013:

When entering Norway with more than five dogs, a health certificate issued by a veterinarian approved by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority is required. The certificate is valid for 4 months. Before traveling home, the dog must be inspected within 24 hours and the veterinarian must note in the animal’s passport that the inspection has been carried out. Veterinarians at Beaver Trap Trail offer this free of charge in close proximity to the competition. Notified at check-in.
